Hot Weather, Healthy Metabolism: Simple shifts to support your wellness this summer

Hot Weather, Healthy Metabolism: Simple Shifts for Summer Wellness

Summer is the perfect time to reset, recharge, and support your metabolism in ways that feel natural and sustainable. With longer days, fresh seasonal produce, and more chances to move and rest, small shifts in your daily habits can make a big difference in blood sugar balance, hormone health, and energy.

Here are some of my favorite simple strategies to help your metabolism thrive this season:

Prioritize Morning Sunlight + Movement Getting outside in natural light within the first 30–60 minutes of waking helps reset your circadian rhythm and regulate cortisol—both key players in metabolic health. Pair that sunlight with a walk, gentle stretch, or even a few deep breaths on your patio to set the tone for your day. And always apply your SPF—Colorescience makes my go-to mineral options for daily protection.

Stay Hydrated—with Electrolytes, Not Just Water When it’s hot out, plain water alone won’t cut it. We lose electrolytes—sodium, potassium, magnesium—through sweat, and that can leave you tired, foggy, and craving sugar. I love adding LMNT electrolytes to my water, especially during workouts or busy days. Just one simple shift can make a big difference in how you feel.

Load Up on Metabolism-Friendly Produce Summer is full of nutrient-dense fruits and veggies that support gut health, liver detox, and insulin sensitivity. Think cucumbers, arugula, berries, tomatoes, watermelon, and cruciferous veggies like broccoli and cabbage. Plus, the water content in many of these naturally helps with hydration and appetite regulation.

Don’t Skip Protein—Even When It’s Hot Out When it’s warm, lighter meals sound more appealing, but don’t skimp on protein. It’s essential for maintaining muscle, supporting hormone health, and keeping blood sugar stable. I aim for about 30 grams per meal—think grilled chicken, wild-caught fish, eggs, Greek yogurt, or plant-based proteins like lentils and tofu.

Cool Down Your Nervous System Your metabolism responds to stress just as much as it does to food and exercise. Summer is a great time to incorporate nervous-system-friendly practices like breathwork, cold plunges, mindfulness, or simply more time outdoors. Lowering stress helps balance cortisol, which in turn supports healthy thyroid and sex hormone function.

Bonus Tip: Consider Supportive Therapies Depending on your goals, summer can also be a great time to optimize your health with added support. This could include medications, B12 or Lipo+ injections, or targeted supplements—all options I discuss with patients regularly. Supporting your metabolism from multiple angles can be a game-changer.

Hormone therapies, including testosterone replacement, may involve off-label use and are not suitable for everyone.
